Commonly
known as the Venus Slipper Orchid or the Snakeskin Orchid, because of its
mottled
foliage,
this highly ornamental plant was the first species in the Genus Paphiopedilum to be
introduced
in the plant world. It inhabits shady banks of streams and rivulets in the
Tropical and
Sub-tropical Valleys in Eastern Nepal, Sikkim
to Meghalaya and Arunachal in India,
Bhutan, Bangladesh
and China at 300-800m. They flower
during the months of December–February.
